Serie A is the league that punishes a confident tierlist hardest, because the title has genuinely moved around. Inter, Milan, Juventus and Napoli have all held the champion slot in recent years, and Atalanta, Roma, Lazio, Fiorentina and Bologna have all made a real mess of somebody's neat top four. That is the fun of it. One club goes in champion. Second to fourth are the Champions League places, and a strong European season for Italian clubs can hand the country a fifth. Fifth to eighth is chasing Europe. Ninth to fourteenth is mid table, six slots, and in Italy that tier is where most of the league actually lives. Fifteenth to seventeenth is the relegation battle. Eighteenth to twentieth is the drop, and it means Serie B, which historically has not been a quick trip back for anybody.
