The tiers are real positions, not letters, so every placement is a take that can be argued with. First is the title and it holds one club. Second to fourth are the Champions League places, which is where the argument usually lives: Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Aston Villa cannot all fit in four slots, and choosing who misses out is the whole game. Fifth to eighth is the European scrap, where fifth normally carries a Europa League place and the cup winners take the rest. Ninth to fourteenth is mid table, six slots, the tier nobody wants and almost a third of the league gets. Fifteenth to seventeenth is the relegation battle, a season survived rather than won. Eighteenth to twentieth is the drop, and in England the drop means the Championship.
That is what makes a Premier League tierlist harder than naming a top four. You have to be right about the bottom as well as the top, and about the middle that nobody previews in August.
